The Green Team worked alongside 8 Boston Cares volunteers and several neighborhood residents of the Deforest Street Cliff on Saturday, April 14th to clean-up large amounts of trash and debris that has been dumped for several years. Volunteers pulled bottles, large pieces of wood, a water cooler and TV, rusted metal, and construction debris from the three-tiered site - more than enough trash to fill Paul Sutton’s truck to the brim twice.

While the amount of trash we found was disheartening, the overwhelming enthusiasm to beautify on the part of the volunteers was infectious! Neighborhood families who are dedicated to restoring the Cliff, and Boston Cares volunteers hailing from all over the Greater Boston area worked hard under the sun all afternoon to prep the site for our Spring Tree Planting. The Green Team has struck again!

Please join us on Saturday, May 12th from 10am - 1pm for a Tree Planting at the Cliff: Serviceberry and Hawthornes that will provide beauty, natural habitat, a guard against wind and weather, and muscle for the Cliff’s soil in the coming years.

November 5th: Green Team Launches Family Nature Day and Anti-littering Campaign

The Southwest Boston CDC Green Team, Boston Natural Areas Network (BNAN) and Boston Parks and Recreation Department will host a family nature day on Saturday, November 5th from 10am to 12noon, in Hyde Park’s Sherrin Woods (corner of Sherrin Street and Austin Street).

The Sherrin Woods are home to wetlands and to a variety of native trees including oak, hickory, cherry and birch, all of which are vital to absorbing excess groundwater from flooding, snow melting, and heavy storms.  Friends and neighbors are invited to tour the woods with the Hyde Park Green Team, Crew Leader Lucy Churchill, and with BNAN Stewardship Manager and urban naturalist Karen Chaffee. Participants will learn a variety of ecological facts about the woods and will learn how to identify native and invasive plants.  Participants will then help remove invasive plants and groom trails. Tools will be supplied and, children are welcome with their families.

In an effort to stop the illegal dumping of yard leaves and other harmful debris in Sherrin Woods, the Green Team recently conducted outreach to neighbors along Austin, Sherrin, Windham, and Marston Streets. The Team distributed free yard waste bags, and refrigerator magnets with information about the City of Boston’s free yard-waste-removal service, where to report safety concerns and illegal dumping, and other facts about Sherrin Woods.

This fall the Green Team also began anti-littering education in the Cleary and Logan Square business district.  The Team visited the YMCA and the Hyde Park Community Center, where they spoke to younger students about the harmful effects of littering, and handed out ‘Can the Trash, Love Hyde Park!’ buttons.  The Team visited 50 Hyde Park businesses, asking owners to post anti-littering flyers in their windows; and asking customers to help keep the streets clean by putting trash in the trash cans placed throughout the Squares.

For more information about the upcoming nature day or about the anti-littering campaign please contact Pat Alvarez at Southwest Boston CDC at 617-364-7300 or at palvarez@swbcdc.org.

The Green Team is back this fall for six weeks!  Check them out as they work in Sherrin Woods, reach out to the neighbors of Sherrin Woods with yard waste collection info, do an anti-litter campaign in the business district, and help with a Boston Natural Areas Network event!

The team is distributing magnetic fliers to neighbors with contact information for safety issues and quirky facts about the woods:

Did you know Sherrin is the 2nd largest urban wild in all of Boston?

Did you know that your yard waste actually HARMS the woods?  It suffocates the ground and native plants.

Did you know that Sherrin is owned and maintained by the Boston Conservation Commission?

Instead of dumping in the woods, you can get a free pickup from Public Works! They will turn your yard waste into compost for the community gardens! Request a FREE sticker to place on your bags by calling 617-635-7572, or go to cityofboston.gov.

See you this fall!

As always, contact us with questions! 617-364-7300, or leave a comment here!

Education and Service

These past few weeks have breezed by, through scorching hot 100 deg days and cool 85 deg days that are perfect for working.  We have also taken educational trips to the “all-green-teams” conference Event 180, learning about solar power at Roxbury Community College, discovering sustainable design and thinking outside the box at Boston Architectural College, and serving at the Hyde Park Art Scene.

Through our work, we have connected on a ground-level, face-to-face basis with residents and businesses in our community, sharing our passion and idealism in hopes of being the inspiration for positive change within Hyde Park.

The Green Team takes on the Neponset!

On July 15th, the Green Team met up with UMASS professor Anamarija Frankic and DCR Ranger Jake Vogenberg for a canoe adventure on the Neponset River.  The team found that:

-the water has very low oxygen levels, meaning it is unhealthy for plants and animals

- people have been dumping in the Neponset!  The outfalls, from sewers and drains, pour water that is often contaminated into the water.

- We can do something about it.
